Summer Yummers
I’ve been teaching my grandson to say, “Yummers!” when we share food. He does it pretty well, though he somehow manages to replace the r with a w sort of sound.
“Yummers” has been on my mind today because I made a big ole mess of green beans and new potatoes. Oh, mama. It’s not summer till you’ve had at least one pot of that. And it’s so easy to make: fresh green beans, new potatoes, a ham shank (or hock), salt pork, salt, pepper and water, and a couple hours later . . . mm mm mm yummers!
(No, green beans and new potatoes isn’t a health food. The more pork fat, the better.)
What are your favorite summer gotta-have’em dishes? Homemade ice cream? Sno-cones? Fresh tomatoes sprinkled with balsamic vinegar and feta cheese? (Another of my favorites.)
Share. And if they’re really yummy, I’ll be asking for recipes!

It’s not summer until the first watermelon is cut! I can eat one all by myself, but I share with the dogs, horses and cows.
I think my other summer must haves are fresh homegrown tomatoes eaten plain, with dressing or on a BLT. Fried fresh okra…yummers!

Oh, yeah, fresh okra. And cucumbers, sliced and lightly sprinkled with salt.
I like BLTs to a point. I make it with lots of tomatoes and mayo, no lettuce, eat a few bites with bacon, then take the bacon off, give it to Jack and eat the rest of sandwich. Yum.

Where did you buy the green beans? Bixby? The grocery store? Were they really fresh? I love gb & nps. I’ve had new potatoes (Dad grew them) but I’ve yet to have my fresh gbs.
I love home grown tomatoes! Especially with homemade biscuits and gravy. YUMMERS!
And breath mints mean summer. Onions, cucumbers, water, sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper. (The dish was dubbed breath mints by an ex-bil) Get the right mix and your tongue will lap your brains out. Ooooh, baby!
I love watermelon straight from the field. YELLOW WATERMELON! Not cold. Not salted. Just break it open and chow down.
Oh, oh, oh, wait! I know. My favorite is Grandmommie Corn. Fresh corn, cut off the cob (scrape the cob for the “milk” so the dish will thicken) cooked in bacon drippings until it turns really yellow, then add cream, sugar, salt and pepper. If I could make the Homer Simpson noise, I’d do it here. That is sooooo good!!!
You guys made me hungry. Lets take summer specials to the meeting tomorrow. Wouldn’t that be great?
And we could all waddle home afterward. LOL!

There’s a fruit stand set up on Utica just south of the BA. We stopped there after therapy the other day and bought the green beans, potatoes and a watermelon — all appropriately yummers. I think the beans might have come from Bixby, but I can’t remember for sure.
I love onions and cukes in vinegar/water. I also fix them with a sour cream/cider vinegar dressing that’s great.
Okay, you’ve tantalized me with the Grandmommie corn before when we went to Conrad’s and you bought a bushel of corn. I want exact ingredients so I can try it.
Hmm . . . wonder if I’ve missed the Queen corn this summer? Buttered and grilled . . . oh, wow.

I want some green beans! Dad gave me new potatoes, but I made them itno special potato salad for the 4th.
The first summer dish I have to have is breath mints (named by an ex-bil.) Cucumbers, onions, vinegar, water, salt, pepper, sugar. Get the right mix (1/2 and 1/2 water, vinegar unless the vinegar is really strong) and your tongue will be lapping your brains out. (My dad, granddad and probably great-granddad used that phrase.)
Home grown tomatoes with homemade biscuits and gravy for breakfast is the food of angels!
And, of course, Grandmommie Corn. Cut the corn off the cob, scrape the cob for the milk to thicken the dish, cook kernals in bacon drippings until they’re bright yellow, add cream, sugar, salt and pepper.
So good, you’ll founder!

Ice cream. I’m a ice cream nut–especially in the summertime.

Ice cream is a year-round thing in my family, but it’s especially good to have a little softened vanilla ice cream with mashed strawberries and a bit of sugar. My, my.

Our summer time tradition is blackberry cobbler made from fresh blackberries we pick on our farm and home-made ice cream. Yummers!

Have you ever had dewberries, Lynn? They grow wild out around my mom’s house, and for years we’d help her pick them for cobblers. They were incredible.
Gosh, I haven’t had a cobbler in years. I think I need to go to the store!
Haven’t had homemade ice cream in ages either. My bil always makes a batch for the 4th, but he makes pineapple something-or-other, and I prefer plain vanilla in the homemade.

I used to pick dewberries when I was little and my mother made cobbler. Yum yum. I want ice cream rightnow but can’t due to the heat and racing later.

I have two summer dishes I HAVE to have…and I mean I eat them until I’m sick. BLT (with homegrown tomatoes, of course) and strawberry shortcake (with the little sponge cake cup thingees. And when I was young, I always loved our church’s ice cream social where we might have as many as ten different flavored home-made ice cream. Yum!

Fresh, ripe strawberries . . . double yummers! When we lived in North Carolina, the berries ripened around the beginning of May. Every Saturday Bob and I would load the two dogs in th truck, and we’d drive to this little town for burgers at a fast-food place that kept cookies for visiting puppers. Then, on the way back, we’d stop at a pick-your-own strawberry place. We always intended to pick ours, but every time, we’d see all those buckets and cartons of already-picked berries for sale, and we’d buy 8 quarts. Between us and Jasper and Duc, we always ate at least two quarts before we got back home. Oh, mama!

So sorry, Sandee . . . not! If you haven’t already, get thee to a farmer’s market! You’re missing the best stuff in the world.

Italian potato salad – boiled new potatoes, a whole mess of flat leaf parsley, and enough extra virgin olive oil to bring it all together into a nice, yellow-green, chunky consistency.
Caprese salad – vine ripened tomatoes, basil, a touch of salt, and drizzle with extra virigin olive oil (this is where you use the good stuff).
A little pasta tossed with diced garden cucumber, fresh corn, and italian dressing.
Better than ice cream in the summer – SORBET!! So many fresh fruits, so little time.
Strawberry shortcake, berry parfaits (I like mine with vanilla yogurt and granola in each layer), and roasted squash along side a nice pork roast. Mmmm…
