Public Service Announcement

The last time I posted, I was in Sitka, Alaska. High temp for the week was 57 with drizzly rain. Boy am I longing to go back! We’re sitting here baking in the Oklahoma sun with temps running 100+. Yikes! Doing ANYTHING outside just seems ludicrous. So I don’t. I’d wanted to ride the Harley to the meeting Saturday . . . but not when it’s this hot. Give me a nice air conditioned car, thank you very much.

All any of us want to do is hunker down and wait out the dog days of summer . . . which is early this year, I think. The heat drains you not only physically but mentally. Which isn’t conducive to being creative. However, when you have deadlines to meet you have no choice. You have to sit down and write. And hope it’s coherent, believable and engaging. I find that after I go to bed is when my mind finally kicks in and I think of wonderful lines and solve plot problems. But the problem is . . . by the next morning, it’s gone. *sigh*

Okay, now on to the Public Service Announcement portion of this blog.

It’s HOT!!!  So:

Wear light clothing – drink lots of water – avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Stay indoors under the air conditioner if you can.

Check on your elderly neighbors and family. They won’t ask for help; they’ll just sit in their homes and bake. A heat stroke can overtake you faster than you think.

If you think you or someone around you might be having a heat stroke call 9-1-1, then get the person cooled down as much as possible. i.e. get out of the heat and get liquids in them!

Keep your pets indoors, or if they go out make sure they have plenty of fresh cool water and shade. They can have heat strokes just like people.

I’m not a medical professional so I’m sure there are tons of things I’ve forgotten to list, but you get the general idea. It’s hot enough to fry eggs on the sidewalk so take precautions. We love ya’. :-)

  1. I get to take y’all’s word that it is hot. I’m in a hotel room watching a storm roll in. The temps are in the high 60s, and well. . .I thrilled to just be doing nothing. Resting up for the rounds of parties later. Ahhhhhh

  2. Rub it in, Meg!! I stepped outside yesterday and could feel the heat sucking the water out of my pores. And I gotta mow this week.

    Have fun at your parties!

    • I hadn’t mowed in so long that I found another car parked in the pasture. Took so long on Saturday that I got sunburned legs! Now I’ll have a ‘real’ cute tan line with my sandals. ;-)

        At least it’s hard to get your mower hung up on a car, like I did on the tree trunk. (I cut down all those trees; you’d think I’d remember where their trunks are!)

        I got a bit of a tan on my feet mowing last time, but usually they’re so covered with dirt and grass bits that cling to the heavy-duty bug spray that the sun can’t penetrate.

        Go to Beale Street and listen to some blues for me!

  3. Enjoy the trip and nice cool weather, Meg. I just hope the storms aren’t too severe. And you party all night long! lol

    Mowing in this heat? Ugh! Although it did feel fairly cool when I walked out the door at 7:15 this morning. Maybe that’s the time you should be out there…r-e-a-l-l-y early in the mornings. But it is going to “cool” down into the lower 90’s later this week. It’ll feel down right cold. {yeah, right. hehe}

  4. Linda,

    Thanks for the advice about stayin’ cool in all this heat. Bert and I are having culture shock getting used to this heat. spw

    This heat is horrible! I usually don’t mind the summer, but this year’s is a doozy. I swear, one year we flood, the next we cook. What I wouldn’t give for nice balmy weather.

    We spent the weekend in St. Louis where the temp was 86 but the humidity was 100%. I left a good portion of me in St. Louis when I melted onto the sidewalk.

  7. Ah, Sandee. Wouldn’t it be nice to go to the beach and play in the ocean? That’s the one thing I truly miss about living in California.

    Even if you are sweltering, I’m glad y’all are back home.

    • Marilyn Says:

      California beaches? Hmm . . . practically the entire time we lived in San Diego, the beaches were either closed, about to be closed or just reopening due to sewage from Tijuana. I rarely dared dip even a toe in it.

      But the SC/NC beaches . . . oh, man . . . I’d love to be in either state.

    • Linda,

      Apparently, you didn’t visit the same beaches we did in SoCal. The water there is wetsuit cold all damn year long. spw

  8. Balmy summers in Oklahoma? Hmmm, let me think a minute. Nope. Sorry, Kira. Don’t think it’s going to happen. :-{ But that’s a nice thought. And if you can hold your breath a couple days, it will cool down a bit. {Thankfully!!}

  9. LOL

    Lynn, you are so funny. So does the sidewalk now look like the Hollywood walk of fame? i.e. you left your mark on it. Maybe we should take a road trip back up, just to check and see. hehe

    The heat doesn’t bother me. Of course, I never spend more than 5 minutes in it. I go to the mailbox. Walk into work, etc. And if my A/C breaks down, I move into a hotel until it’s fixed.

  11. A nice ‘cool’ hotel. Sounds like a good plan to me!

  12. Sandee, I didn’t say we actually went IN the water. Just that we enjoyed going TO the beaches. See, slight of pen and you can confuse everyone. LOL
