Good morning! It’s 5:07 am, and I’m just starting my first cup of coffee.
Can you believe it’s November already? I mean, you barely get past Halloween and bam! November.
November is a month when the world is dying and the beautiful leaves are disappearing and being replaced with dirt brown ones, but on the up side we have Thanksgiving and, for some writers at least, we have NaNoWriMo. (I hope I spelled that right.) I’ve never joined, but as I understand it, the object is to write an entire 50,000 word book in a month.
All you NANOWRIMO writers out there, speak up and tell us how many words you have so far this month. I promise we’ll cheer you on even as we sit back and watch a little more TV.
Why haven’t I tried it? (I hear you #4.) Well, other than the fact that I’d probably punk out after the first week, I find that when I’m writing fast–to make a specific and HIGH word count, I usually write poorly. So I stay with my poke-along-and-stay-at-it style. My motto is slow and steady wins the race. These days I’m definitely a tortoise.
November is also the month we celebrate Veteran’s Day and my niece Faith’s birthday.
Then we have Thanksgiving. I’m really not in the turkey day mood, are you? I don’t have one of my turkeys out, gobbling around the house this year. I tried to get in the mood by purchasing a Martha Stewart magazine. I mean if a perfectly roasted turkey on a magazine cover with Martha Steward inside can’t put me where I should be mentally, what can? No one, apparently. I haven’t even opened the book yet.
We’re also finishing up our unpublished writers contest this month at RWI. Jaci Burton has a great blog about mistakes newby writers make on her blog. Check it out if you have a minute.
The really funny part is I love November. I like the cool temperatures and the great fall clothes. I like wood fires and burning candles. Apples and caramel, warm, hearty soups–all favs of mine!
Another favorite of mine is a new one. I have a group of psychics who’ll be interviewed, one each Saturday, for the entire month of November, and probably December, too. We’ll see. Those interviews are on the Twisted Sisters blog, and archieved on my personal blog.
Does November rank a thumbs up or down with you? And do you NaNoWriMo?
I love NaNoWriMo. I’m at 14070 today, I try to bank words early in the month so my holiday isn’t spent sequestered in a room trying to catch up!! spw
Zounds, Sandee. That’s a bunch for only 5 days. Go get ‘em!
I had not heard of this NaNoWriMo concept until now. Heck, sounds like a challenge, might just jump on this. I started a new MS on Monday because the idea wouldn’t leave me alone and my fingers started to itch- its already at 12,000 or so.

I love November. Halloween is my fave holiday and I guess that good feeling just leaks through and paints the entire month of November. I get to see family I havn’t seen all year and my mom and I spend the entire day of Thanksgiving in the kitchen.
The only thing I don’t like about November is it starts the holiday season, and although I love the holidays, I’m selfish and bemoan the fact that I don’t get as much of a chance to write as I would like… but I guess if I do this speed writing thing I won’t have an excuse
Thanks for the link to the mistakes made by new writers thing- I need all the help I can get!
I’m with you on the holiday season, Zinny. You guys are hot! Write while you’ve got the words. That’s wonderful.
And you’re welcome. Jaci has some good advice.
I love November because of the seasonal changes and Thanksgiving. But I’m with Zinny, on that the holidays screw up my writing schedule really bad. I’m not dedicated enough to sit at the computer when I could be decorating or baking or even shopping. Though I am usually a Christmas-Eve shopper.
You guys crack me up! The holidays wreak havoc with my writing, I think that’s why a short month like November concentrates the efforts. It’s a downhill slide, baby!! spw
